One aspect of college life: Tau Beta Sigma.
Five days before my freshman year of college started I started band camp. I’ve was in marching band all of high school, and in band for a total of nine years. Coming to NAU I didn’t even hesitate doing marching band up here, I never thought I would join a fraternity let alone a sorority. Three days into band camp I could say I was successfully recruited for Tau Beta Sigma, the national honorary band sorority. Over the course of the first semester I went through the process of becoming an active member. Being a member of an organization that is so close-knit has been a life changing experience. I can’t really write out what TBS means to me. It is having a group of people that is always there for you no matter what. It is providing service to the bands of NAU for the purpose of selfless service. It is working together for a greater good. It is having such a deep connection with people that you never could image. Every week I find out more about my sisters. I find out how much we take on each other’s traits. You can go your whole life believing that you are an individual, but after joining a sorority or fraternity, you realize that there are so many people just like you. It wasn’t until recently I realized how much my sisters mean to me. Over the past six months I have been planning on participating in the Walt Disney World College Internship, and only two weeks ago it hit me. I was going to be leaving my sisters. I never expected I would TBS so much. I was OK with not being home for Christmas, but being gone from my sisters for five months (and three for summer!) seems like too much. I never would have expected to be so involved with college, but I was twice as involved in high school so I guess it figures. College has been a great experience so far, and I would not change any of it for the world.
(Note: My great-grand-big/ma suggested contacting a close school in Florida and still being involved in TBS. Good news. I researched all the active chapters of TBS in Florida; map quested them from Walt Disney World, and found one only fifty minutes away! I even emailed someone from the chapter already and feel one hundred times better about going.)
